U.S. Issues Updated Travel Advisory for the Bahamas

The U.S. State Department has updated its travel advisory for the Bahamas, urging travelers to exercise increased caution due to rising concerns about crime, watercraft safety, and firearm restrictions. Here's what you need to know before visiting this popular Caribbean destination.

  • Crime Risks: U.S. State Department urges caution in Nassau and Freeport due to violent crime, especially in areas like "Over the Hill." Vacation rentals may lack security.

  • Swimming & Watercraft Hazards: Risks include unlicensed jet ski operators, sexual assaults, and boating accidents. Travelers should avoid swimming alone and stay alert near watercraft.

  • Firearms & Ammunition Restrictions: Firearms and ammunition are illegal. U.S. citizens have been detained for inadvertently carrying them.

  • Safety Tips: Stay aware of surroundings, secure accommodations, and sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time updates.

Are you travel‑ready? Starting May 7, 2025, to board domestic flights your driver's license or state issued ID must be a REAL ID or you'll need another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport.

If you haven't already, now is the time to visit your state's DMV and get your REAL ID

INSIDER TRAVEL HACK
Book window and aisle seats to keep the middle open

If you're traveling as a couple in coach, try booking the window and aisle seats in the same row. Since middle seats are usually the last to be chosen, there’s a chance no one will sit between you, giving you extra space. If the flight fills up, you can always offer to switch with the person in the middle, giving them the choice of a window or aisle while still sitting next to your companion. It’s a simple trick that could make your flight more comfortable—or even score you an entire row to yourselves.

The Top Lifestyle Choice a Longevity Expert Recommends for a Longer Life

Dr. Sofiya Milman, who studies centenarians, believes exercise is the most important factor for longevity. While a balanced routine of healthy eating, sleep, and stress management is key, exercise—particularly strength training to combat muscle loss—is crucial. Milman also notes that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to living longer, as “super-agers” often share the same habits as others, including alcohol consumption and being overweight. The focus should be on maintaining good health to delay chronic conditions, improving healthspan, not just lifespan.
